IPL 2018: Highlights from Week 2 and Fantasy Cricket Tips

We’re back with the latest instalment of Edges & Sledges. We cover all the big stories of the week on the show, including Sunrisers Hyderabad’s first loss and Mumbai’s first win of the 2018 IPL. Some really big moves on the fantasy front with the big guns finally coming into their own – the Universe Boss, Watto and ABdV have all joined the IPL party.

This week we are joined by Siddharth Poddar, a Rajasthan Royals fan who talks about the double Rs, their comeback to the IPL and the role of associates in the IPL. Pod knows cricket!

Our latest podcast is live on iTunesAnchor or PocketCasts for Android and here is a link to YouTube video of Episode 8.

Recap

To recap the main performances of the week:

KXIP v CSK: KXIP won by 4 runs despite a late charge by MSD on one leg. Chris Gayle was the man of the match for his 63 runs, announcing his return to the IPL.

KKR v DD: KKR won by 71 runs. More depression for DD fans. Rana and Russell demolish the DD bowlers.

MI v RCB: Rohit’s 94 overcame Kohli’s 92 not out. Mumbai Indians finally got some points on the board.

RR v KKR: Nitish Rana again came to the party to take KKR to a 7 wicket win.

KXIP v SRH: The Gaylestorm (104) handed the Sunrisers their first loss of the IPL 2018. Gayle announced that Virender Sehwag had saved the IPL by picking him in the auction. Sehwag promptly confirmed this on Twitter. Rab ne bana di jodi!

CSK v RR: Watto smashed a ton as well just to show he’s still got it. RR fell short by 64 runs.

KKR v KXIP: Another Gayle/Rahul demolition job to breach KKR’s fortress at Eden.

RCB v DD: When AB is flying, no one can catch him. After a great innings by Pant, AB almost single handedly made sure that DD fans had to endure yet another loss. Gambhir must be scratching his head wondering how a team that looks so good on paper is sitting at the bottom of the table.

The IPL 2018 rolled on this weekend and in a reversal of the IPL’s chase and win strategy, Sunday finally saw two games being won by the team that batted first. That said, Dhoni and CSK nearly pulled off yet another incredible run chase against KXIP. What an innings, Thala!

India vs New Zealand, 1st ODI (Mumbai, 2017)

Since falling agonisingly short of the Champions Trophy, Kohli and his band of merry men have had a busy summer. India may have lost Anil Kumble as a coach but they have continued their stellar form to conquer Sri Lanka (3-0 in tests, 5-0 in ODIs), West Indies (3-1, ODIs) and Australia (4-1, ODIs). With the weather cooling down and Diwali celebrations nearly complete, the Indian team gets down to the serious business of hosting New Zealand for 3 ODI and 3 T20s.

The ICC Rankings tell us that India should win the ODI series while NZ should walk away with the T20 honours; India is the #2 ODI Team, up against the #5 ranked NZ side. Conversely NZ has top T20 billing against India’s fifth place.

Cricket, however, would be deathly boring if everything went to plan.

The ODI series kicks off Sunday, October 22nd, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai (1.30pm IST). Read More …

Kolkata Knight Riders

Skipper:                                  Gautam Gambhir

2016 Finish:                          #4 of 8, losing the eliminator to eventual champions

Best Finish Ever:                  2012 and 2014 Winners

First Match:                           Gujarat Lions vs. KKR at Rajkot, Friday April 7th, 2017 at 8pm IST

Team Balance:                      Probably the best balanced side of all – batting, all-rounders, spinners, pacers, young, old!

Players to Watch:

  1. Robin Uthappa: No longer playing for India, Uthappa continues to shine in the IPL; 3390 runs with 17 half centuries since 2008
  2. Trent Boult: Stuck in a stacked SRH lineup last year, he barely played, but will be an excellent fast bowling replacement for Morne Morkel
  3. Chris Woakes: T20 Strike rate of 139 with the bat, 400+ first class wickets with the ball. KKR may have found the perfect replacement for Andre Russell.

Gujarat Lions
