The teams: Gujarat Lions v Delhi Daredevils – GL v DD looks like a match to savour! In the first half of the league stage, DD has shown that it is a team that cannot be taken lightly. After their dismal performance in the first game, these Dilli ka mundas have bounced back strong and despite a one run loss to GL, DD will want to overcome GL in the second leg. DD will desperately want a win this time to maintain their number two position in the table. GL have looked the best team so far in the IPL but in the recent game against KXIP their batting line up showed some cracks against the spin bowling of Axar Patel. One wonders if there is any place for Aaron Finch to make a comeback to the team – that would really make the GL batting line up a force to reckon with.
The Venue: Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. Having hosted back to back games, the pitch should remain the same as the previous game – sharing eight wickets between them, spinners dominated proceedings. The trend of chasing is starting to change and so it will be interesting to see what decision the captain that wins the toss will make.
Our picks for your fantasy cricket team
Chris Morris – After a slow start to the tournament, Chris Morris has shown he is worth every penny that DD paid for him at the 2016 auction. Although he didn’t fire in the last game against KKR, he is sure to be promoted up the order to steer the innings. He has proven himself an able solider for captain Zaheer Khan and will bowl his full quota of overs in all likelihood.
Dwayne Smith – We have said it before – Dwayne Smith is Mr. IPL. While it is surprising that he is not a part of the victorious West Indies T20 team, the IPL is Smith’s hunting ground. His clean hitting down the ground in the powerplays is a massive asset for any team and he will be looking to build on his opening partnerships with Brendon McCullum. And lest you forget, he can also bowl some useful medium pace and often picks up a wicket or two when he does!
Shivil Kaushik – Our *wildcard* pick for today, Shivil Kaushik showed he has potential and more than just an awkward action. Even though his Paul Adamesque bowling action is doing the rounds on social media, he picked up 3 crucial wickets and bowled within the first 10 overs of the game. Raina seems to have a lot of faith in this youngster and lets face it, its always fun to watch someone a chinaman bowler.
[Interesting fact on how the term “chinaman” came about from sports.stackexchange.com:
The name has its origins in a Test match played between the West Indies and England at Old Trafford, Manchester, in the year 1933. Elliss “Puss” Achong, a player of Chinese origin, was a left-arm orthodox spinner, playing for the West Indies at the time. According to folklore, Achong is said to have had Walter Robins stumped off a surprise delivery that spun into the right-hander from outside the off stump. As he walked back to the pavilion, Robins said to the umpire, “fancy being done by a bloody Chinaman!”, leading to the popularity of the term in England, and subsequently, in the rest of the world.]
